According to Sandra Bullock, Keanu Reeves once surprised her with truffles and champagne after she admitted she had never eaten either.
Keanu Reeves made a kind gesture, and Sandra Bullock is remembering it.
The 57-year-old Bullock and Reeves first crossed paths on the set of 1994’s Speed.
The two became fast friends on set, and the actress recounted to Esquire that Bullock once brought up the fact that she hadn’t tried truffles or Champagne while they were chatting about them.
After Bullock said, “No, never had ’em,” in response to Reeves’s question, “Really?,” the two apparently moved on to a different subject.
Reeves rode up on his motorcycle a few days later, she told the magazine, as she and her roommate were at home doing nail art.
Bullock opened the door after ringing the doorbell to discover a delightful surprise. Esquire was informed by her that Reeves had arrived accompanied by roses, Champagne, and truffles.
He stepped inside and sat on Bullock’s couch as she poured Champagne and cracked open the truffles, telling her, “I just thought you might want to try Champagne and truffles to see what it’s like.”
According to her, Bullock went so far as to paint Reeves’ nails black—the same shade she was using on her own—when the actor reached out for her.
“He’s a listener,” Bullock told Esquire. “And it drives. People. Crazy.”
According to Bullock, Reeves had a date and did not linger for long after delivering the truffles and Champagne.
Bullock praised her co-star’s listening skills, saying that they were on full display in his thoughtful gesture.
“That’s what I mean that it drives you crazy,” she told Esquire. “When I first met him, I would spend as much time as I could filling a silence, just to feel comfortable. And the more I jibber-jabbered on, the quieter he would get.
“And I thought, I don’t understand what’s happening!,” she continued. “He’s looking at me with eyes of confusion. He’s quiet. Did I say something to offend him? And then a day or two later, he would arrive with a note or a little package, saying, ‘I thought about what you said.’ And he would have his response.”
Bullock interjected, asking, “How many people do you know like that?”
Bullock maintained that she and Reeves never dated, despite his romantic gesture that day; she did, however, imply that the two may have been a nice pair.
Furthermore, Bullock shared with Esquire her belief that a romantic relationship between herself and Reeves “could have survived” had they done so.
“Keanu’s a guy who, I feel like, is friends with every woman he’s ever dated,” she explained. “I don’t think there’s anyone who has something horrible to say about him. So maybe we could have survived. I don’t know.”
She added, “But we didn’t have to survive anything. We just get to grow up together on parallel roads and tip our hats and meet for a dinner and try to work together. And the longer time goes on, the more in awe I am of the human being.”
“Would I have been able to say that if he had dumped me and made me angry? Probably not,” Bullock said.
