Jessica Woodruff has always loved animals, making it all the more heartbreaking when she experienced the most tragic event of her life. On February 9th, 2017, a devastating fire engulfed Jessica’s barn, taking the lives of several animals, including four goats, a pig, and seven precious puppies. The puppies, just three weeks old, had no chance to escape, and the fire spread so rapidly that everything was over within moments.
Jessica and her dog Daisy were powerless to save the animals, and the loss shattered them both. In the days following the fire, Daisy would wander to the remains of the barn, whining in despair for her puppies. Her sorrow was evident, and Jessica, witnessing Daisy’s heartbreak, knew she had to find a way to help her grieving dog.
Determined to bring some healing to Daisy, Jessica’s sister, Jacque Barnett, posted on Facebook in search of orphaned puppies in need of fostering. As fate would have it, Lorna Murphy, another dog lover, had recently lost her five-year-old dog, Chloe, shortly after Chloe had given birth to eight puppies. Realizing they could turn their shared tragedies into something beautiful, Jessica and Lorna quickly arranged for Daisy to meet the newborn puppies.
When Daisy was introduced to the puppies, her maternal instincts took over instantly. She began caring for them, feeding and nurturing them as if they were her own. For several weeks, Daisy watched over the puppies, helping them grow strong. Eventually, most of the puppies returned to Lorna, but Jessica and Daisy kept the runt of the litter, a little pup they named Benji.
Daisy’s story is one of resilience and the healing power of love. Through the kindness and compassion of Jessica and Lorna, Daisy found new purpose and comfort after her painful loss, while Lorna’s puppies found a loving foster mom in Daisy.
